Catherton Common Nature Reserve

Catherton Common is a proper slice of Worcestershire countryside just outside Tenbury Wells - a patchwork of heathland, woodland and grassland that feels genuinely wild without being difficult to access. You get the sense straightaway that this isn't a manicured nature reserve; it's the real thing, with all the scrubby charm that entails.

Walkers will find this rewarding, especially those after a couple of hours rambling rather than a full-day expedition. The terrain's varied enough to keep things interesting - open heathland gives way to wooded sections, and the paths are well-trodden without being overcrowded. Bird enthusiasts and botanists will have a field day here, particularly in spring and early summer when the place comes alive with breeding birds and wildflowers. It's the sort of spot where you genuinely might see something unexpected: the common supports a decent population of adders and grass snakes if you're into reptiles.

The reserve is free to explore and there's no formal opening hours that I'm aware of - you simply turn up and walk. Allow a couple of hours minimum for a decent circuit, longer if you're stopping frequently to look at wildlife. It works brilliantly as a morning excursion from any of the nearby parks like Wheathill or Woodland Escapes, all within three miles. This is genuine Midlands countryside, unpretentious and rewarding in equal measure. Not the flashiest nature reserve you'll visit, but often the most worthwhile.
