Catthaw Lands Copse

The trees here are proper thick - oak and beech mostly, with a dense floor of ferns and moss that keeps everything quiet even on a busy day. Catthaw Lands Copse sits just outside Reading, close enough for an afternoon visit but far enough that you actually feel like you've gone somewhere. Walking through feels like stepping into the kind of woodland you'd expect further west in the Cotswolds, not on the Hampshire-Berkshire border.

It's a decent spot for families who don't need attractions with names and admission fees. Kids will spend an hour poking about in the undergrowth, spotting birds, maybe finding a stick worth carrying home. Dog walkers tend to love it here - there's room to roam without feeling hemmed in. The forest floor is soft underfoot, which is a relief if you're not in proper hiking boots.

The real charm is in its ordinariness. No car park, no visitor centre, no one trying to sell you anything. Just woodland that's genuinely been left to do its thing. Depending which way you enter, you can have a fifteen-minute wander or stretch it to a solid hour if you're not in a rush. Early morning is best - fewer people, more bird activity.

If you're staying at Ravenswing Park just down the road, this is an obvious morning sortie. Wellington Country Park is slightly further off but offers more structured facilities if your group needs them. Catthaw works best as a circuit-breaker between park meals and activities, not as your main event.
