Catton Heritage Museum

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Wagtail, Fox Hill, or Bugthorpe Grange are all within five miles - this could be a worthwhile half-hour stop on a rainy afternoon or between walks. It's free or at least asks for a small donation, which is fair given the volunteer effort. Ring ahead to check opening times, as community-run places can be unpredictable. The real draw here is that it's authentic - no interpretation panels trying too hard, just locals who know the story and want to share it. Worth a visit if you're spending time in the area, less so if you're just passing through York.
