Ceag nam Fitheach

The walk up Ceag nam Fitheach from Colintraive is short but properly steep - we're talking twenty minutes of genuine huffing if you keep a decent pace. What makes it worth the effort is the view across the Kyles of Bute, which opens up suddenly once you crest the ridge. You're not fighting through jungle here; it's moorland with decent paths, though boots help on the damp sections.

The peak itself sits at around 400 metres and offers exactly what you'd hope from an Argyll viewpoint - water, distant mountains, and on a clear day, real perspective on just how much landscape there is between you and the horizon. It's the sort of place where twenty minutes at the top feeling wind-bitten and smug beats an hour shuffling round a car park.

This works brilliantly if you're based at Glendaruel Caravan Park, just four miles away. Families with children who can manage a steep walk will find it less demanding than some Argyll peaks, though there's nothing soft about it. Anyone after a proper circuit could combine it with exploring the Kyles themselves - the village and waterfront deserve an afternoon.

Timing matters. Morning light hits the view better than afternoon, and the weather changes fast out here, so start early and don't linger if mist rolls in. No facilities at the summit - bring water and something decent to eat. Free to walk, naturally.
