Cefn Blewog fort

The Iron Age fort sits on high ground above Aberystwyth, commanding views across the Cardigan Bay coast that make the climb worthwhile on its own. Cefn Blewog is what you'd call a proper archaeological site - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just earthworks and ramparts that tell you exactly what this place was meant to do: defend. The fort's multiple defensive lines are still visible if you know what you're looking at, and even if you don't, there's something satisfying about standing where people stood two thousand years ago, watching the same horizon.

Historically minded walkers will appreciate the site far more than casual visitors. You're looking at Iron Age Ceredigion - this isn't a day trip with a café and benches, it's a proper bit of fieldwork. The location alone makes it worth the trek if you're based anywhere near Aberystwyth. Allow a good hour if you're taking time to absorb the surroundings and pick out the defensive features.

Getting there requires decent legs - the approach from Aberystwyth isn't straightforward, and there's real elevation involved. If you're staying at one of the local glamping spots like Dôl Swynol or Brynllwyd, or at Woodlands Caravan Park further out, this makes a solid morning expedition before the afternoon slump. The Ceredigion coast has enough going on that you won't be stuck for something else to do if the fort doesn't grab you, but if Iron Age Wales is your thing, it's absolutely the right detour.
