Cerrig Cochion

The walk up Cerrig Cochion delivers proper views across Snowdonia without the crowds that pack out Snowdon itself. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the approach from near Caernarfon takes you through decent woodland before opening onto moorland with genuine vistas across the valleys below.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you want to linger at the top. It's the sort of walk that suits fell runners as much as families with older kids who don't need hand-holding on every step. The path is reasonably clear, though it can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

If you're camping nearby - and there's no shortage of options within a few miles, from Llyn Gwynant Campsite just down the road to Beddgelert Campsite a bit further afield - this makes a cracking morning or afternoon outing. Pairs well with time exploring the castles and slate quarries around Caernarfon itself, which you'll see hints of from up top on a clear day.

It won't blow your mind if you've already tackled the bigger peaks, but it's worth the detour if you're in the area and want something less taxing than a full day in the mountains. The real draw is that it feels genuinely remote despite being close enough to camp culture to nip back for a cuppa.
