Ceunant Mawr

The stone circle at Ceunant Mawr sits on moorland above Llanberis, an easy walk from the village that puts most visitors at Snowdon's base. It's modest - a ring of weathered rocks that won't stop you in your tracks like Stonehenge might - but that's rather the point. You get genuine solitude here, the kind you won't find at the big-name sites.

The walk up takes twenty minutes or so from Llanberis village, gaining height steadily through rough grass. On a clear day Snowdon dominates the view behind you; on a grey Welsh afternoon, the circle feels even more atmospheric, isolated in mist. The stones themselves date back around four thousand years, Bronze Age work, though archaeologists remain vague about their exact purpose - settlement marker, meeting place, ritual site. That ambiguity is part of the appeal.

Historically minded walkers will get the most from it; children under ten tend to lose interest quickly. It's free, no gates, no facilities - you're simply walking onto open moorland. Allow thirty minutes to an hour including the walk itself. The location works brilliantly if you're basing yourself at one of the Llanberis parks like Snowdon View or Bryn Gloch. Combine it with a proper hike up Snowdon itself, or a gentler afternoon exploring Llanberis village's slate industry heritage. Don't expect a major attraction - expect a proper old stones-on-a-hillside experience, the kind you stumble across in the Welsh uplands.
