Chailey Windmill

A proper working windmill from the 18th century stands on the edge of Chailey, a few miles south of Haywards Heath. You can actually go inside and see the machinery - the millstones, the grinding mechanisms, all the bits that would have turned wheat into flour back when this was a functioning mill. It's not massive, and honestly, you won't spend hours here, but it's the kind of place that clicks into focus once you understand what you're looking at. The volunteers know their stuff and will talk you through how it all worked if you catch them on the right day.

Walking enthusiasts will appreciate the setting more than casual visitors. The windmill sits in open countryside, so it pairs well with a proper ramble around the lanes. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting - it's a working example of rural industrial heritage, not just a shell. Children under ten might find it a bit slow unless they're already into old machinery. The admission details aren't entirely clear from the visitor side, but it's worth ringing ahead.

If you're based at Wild Boar Wood or The Secret Campsite, both excellent spots within three miles, this makes an easy half-morning detour between other South Downs activities. Don't make it your main event, but it's absolutely worth a stop if you're in the area. The walk around the exterior and the countryside views are often better than the interior visit alone.
