Chalkney Wood

The woodland walk through Chalkney Wood, just outside Colchester, is one of those places that rewards you for getting off the main road. It's proper Essex countryside - mixed woodland with enough paths to keep you occupied for an afternoon without feeling like you've walked to the edge of the world.

What you're looking at is a managed wood with decent tree coverage and enough variation in the terrain to make it interesting for families. The paths are generally straightforward, though they can get muddy after rain. You'll see oak and beech mixed in with younger growth, and it's the kind of place where you might spot a muntjac if you're quiet enough. Walkers will find it scratches the itch for a proper woodland walk without needing to drive an hour into Norfolk.

Bring the kids and they'll probably enjoy it for a couple of hours - it's not one of those attractions that'll hold attention all day, but it's ideal if you're staying at Teybrook Orchard or one of the other glamping spots nearby and want to burn off some energy. There's rarely any crowds, which is half the appeal. It's free to access, and you can park and head straight in.

Really though, Chalkney Wood works best as part of a wider day out around Colchester. Combine it with the country parks or a visit into town proper, rather than making it a destination on its own. It's worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't go out of your way just for this.
