What looks like a flat, unremarkable patch of woodland in rural Herefordshire is actually several centuries of forgotten industry. The Charcoal Burning Platform is an archaeological site where medieval and post-medieval charcoal makers left their mark - literally circular platforms where kilns once stood, producing the fuel that fed blacksmiths' forges across the region.

There's not much to see in terms of structures. You're looking at earthworks, depressions, and subtle changes in the forest floor that only make sense once you know what you're looking at. Bring decent boots and patience. This is for people who actually enjoy reading a landscape, who get a kick out of understanding how ordinary people lived and worked centuries ago. Historians and archaeology enthusiasts will find it genuinely absorbing. Families with young kids? They'll be bored within five minutes.

The site sits comfortably within walking distance of Home Farm Caravan and Campsite, making it a decent add-on if you're basing yourselves in Herefordshire for a few days. Arrow Bank Country Holiday Park and Pearl Lake are also within striking distance, though none of these parks will be destinations in themselves - they're launching points for exploring the proper attractions in the area.

Access appears to be open and free, though there's precious little information online. Go during dry weather when the ground's firmer and the earthworks cast shadows that make them easier to read. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough. It's genuinely worth the detour if archaeology interests you, but don't make it your reason for a holiday.
