Charvil Country Park

The lake at Charvil sits quietly between Wokingham and the Thames Valley, a proper local spot that doesn't need Instagram to justify its existence. You get a decent stretch of water surrounded by walking paths, with enough space to breathe and actually hear yourself think - rare enough these days.

It's the kind of place where you can do a loop walk in under an hour, or stretch it to two if you're dawdling. Birdwatchers tend to do well here, and families with younger kids find it manageable without the crowds you'd get at somewhere more famous. The paths are flat and accessible, which matters more than you'd think when you're trying to keep everyone happy.

There's no dramatic scenery or sudden reveals - it's honest, understated countryside. Worth a morning or afternoon if you're camping at Swiss Farm or any of the sites around Henley, which are all within easy reach. You could easily combine it with a proper walk along the Thames itself, which is just a few miles south. Don't come expecting a day out; come expecting a pleasant hour or so of fresh air and water views.

Bring decent shoes if the ground's been wet - the paths get boggy in places. Timing doesn't matter much unless you're keen on specific birds, in which case early morning is your call. Free to visit, no facilities to speak of, and that's part of the appeal if you're not someone who needs a cafe at the end of every walk.
