Chesil Beach (West)

The pebbles stretch for miles, thousands of them, and they crunch under your feet in a way that's either satisfying or maddening depending on your mood. Chesil Beach is a proper geological feat - a barrier beach that's been sorting itself by size for centuries, with pea-sized stones at the western end graduating to fist-sized rocks as you head east. You can walk for hours along this shingle bank with barely another soul around, the sea on one side and the Fleet lagoon on the other.

What makes it special isn't the swimming - don't bother, the water's cold and the shingle drops away steeply - but the walking and the light. On a clear day, you can see right across the bay, and the way the sun hits the pebbles in late afternoon is genuinely lovely. Bring proper shoes though, not plimsolls. Your feet will thank you.

It's free and open year-round, though winter can be brutal with the wind. Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those who don't mind a solitary trek. Kids might manage twenty minutes before the novelty of crunching pebbles wears thin. Abbotsbury sits just inland if you need supplies or a coffee break.

For a longer stay, Litton Lakes is only 3.3 miles away, making it easy to combine beach walks with lake-based activities. The beach itself requires no entry fee - just turn up. Allow at least two hours if you're serious about exploring its length.
