This is fundamentally a working cathedral, not a museum pretending to be one. The cloisters are peaceful enough to make you forget Chester's busy shopping streets exist just outside. The Chapter House is worth lingering in - the roof bosses are detailed enough to occupy you for a solid ten minutes if you're into that sort of thing.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it. Kids might manage thirty to forty minutes unless they're the type who genuinely engage with architecture. Admission is free, though they'll ask for a donation. Allow a good hour if you're actually looking at things rather than just walking through.
