Chilham Castle

The castle sits on a rise above the village of Chilham, a proper Norman keep that's been standing since 1174. From the approach road you get that sudden view - square stone tower rising against the Kent countryside, the sort of thing that makes you reach for your camera before you've even parked.

What you actually get is the exterior and grounds rather than an extensive interior tour. The keep itself is private, but wandering the estate and taking in the architecture from outside is free and takes a solid hour if you're properly exploring. The village square below is charming enough - half-timbered houses, a decent pub - and worth a wander while you're here.

Historically minded visitors will find it interesting; young kids might get restless after thirty minutes once they've clambered about and taken their photos. It's the sort of place that rewards you more if you know a bit about Norman fortifications going in. Photographers love it, especially in late afternoon light when the stone glows.

From Faversham, it's a short drive east into proper countryside. Pair it with a stay at Mount Ephraim Glamping Pods or Painters Farm if you want something comfortable nearby - both are well-rated and within easy reach. Dunn Street Farm is another solid option if those are full. Don't expect to spend a full day here, but as a morning stop en route to something else around Kent, it's well worth the detour.
