Christ Church, High Harrogate

The Victorian Gothic spire of Christ Church dominates High Harrogate's skyline, a proper landmark you'll spot from half the town. Built in the 1870s when Harrogate was booming as a spa resort, it's one of those churches that rewards a closer look - the interior has decent stained glass and the kind of soaring nave that makes you crane your neck upwards. It's not a sprawling cathedral, but it's solid, atmospheric work.

This is really a spot for architecture enthusiasts and anyone with a taste for Victorian ecclesiastical design. Families with young kids might find twenty minutes enough; they'll get bored after that. The churchyard's pleasant for a wander if you've got time to kill between other activities, though it's no Beverley Minster in terms of wow factor.

Harrogate town centre sits right on your doorstep - the church is impossible to miss from the High Street - so it works as a natural break during a shopping trip or a stroll around the Stray. If you're staying at Harrogate Caravan Park or Rudding Holiday Park, you're genuinely close enough for a quick visit without much faffing about. Combine it with a walk through Valley Gardens or a browse of Betty's Tea Rooms, both minutes away.

Don't make a special journey unless you're serious about Victorian churches, but if you're already in town, pop in. It won't cost you much time and the craftsmanship is worth seeing.
