Church Wood

Church Wood is proper woodland - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working forest near Coventry, managed for timber and wildlife, with a decent network of walking trails that take you through ancient oak and beech. The trees are substantial, genuinely tall stuff, and the floor is soft with leaf litter. You'll find it peaceful in a way that urban parks simply aren't.

This is squarely for people who like a proper walk without wanting to climb mountains. Families with kids aged eight upwards will get something from it, though younger ones might find the initial lack of obvious attractions a bit dull. Walkers and birdwatchers are the core audience here - you'll spot nuthatches and woodpeckers if you're patient and keep quiet.

There's no entrance fee and no faffing about with visitor centres. Just arrive, park sensibly, and head into the trees. Allow two to three hours for a decent circuit. Winter visits are less muddy than you'd expect, and spring brings bluebells that look genuinely worth the trip.

If you're staying at Somers Wood Caravan Park just 2 miles away, this makes an excellent morning out before heading elsewhere. Gate Farm CL, 5.5 miles distant, is also close enough for a day trip. The area around Coventry has other woodland walks, but Church Wood works well as part of a broader forest holiday without any tourist infrastructure getting in the way.
