Churchill War Rooms

The lift descends beneath Westminster and you're suddenly transported to August 1940. These underground chambers were where Churchill and his war cabinet actually sheltered during the Blitz, and walking through them feels like stepping into a photograph come alive. The rooms are exactly as they were left - telephones on desks, maps still marked with troop positions, beds crammed into tiny spaces where exhausted officials tried to snatch sleep between air raids.

It's not a massive attraction, which is precisely why it works. You can cover it properly in two to three hours, and the cramped, low ceilings mean you're getting a genuine sense of what it felt like down there. The Cabinet War Room itself is the centrepiece - that map room where decisions that shaped the war were made - but the residential quarters reveal the real story. Churchill's bedroom is surprisingly spartan. The kitchen is impossibly small. These weren't comfortable bunkers; they were survival spaces.

Histor enthusiasts will find this absolutely gripping, though younger children under ten might find it a bit dry and claustrophobic. It rewards slow looking and reading the detailed room descriptions. Adults who lived through or have family connections to the Second World War often come away quite moved.

London's packed with attractions, but this one feels genuinely historical rather than touristy. If you're staying at Lovat Parks nearby, it's easily accessible and worth the journey into central London.
