Chuz Rock

Scrambling up the rocky outcrop near Abergele, you'll find yourself questioning whether the locals who named this place were having a laugh. Chuz Rock isn't much to look at from below - just another craggy bit of Welsh hillside - but the views from the top tell a different story altogether.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper scramble will get the most from this one. The climb isn't technical, but it's steep enough to get your heart rate up and definitely not pushchair territory. Once you're up there, the panoramic sweep across Conwy Bay makes the effort worthwhile, with Anglesey stretching out to the west on clear days.

It's free, naturally, and you can park roadside if you're careful about it. Allow an hour for the round trip, though enthusiastic photographers might linger longer. The rock face catches the afternoon light beautifully, so time your visit accordingly if you're after decent shots.

Staying at one of the holiday parks along this stretch of coast - Bron-y-Wendon is closest at just over a mile away - makes Chuz Rock a decent morning adventure before hitting the beach. It's the sort of mini-expedition that gives kids bragging rights without requiring mountain rescue, and the views are genuinely rewarding once you've earned them.
