Clarke's Plantation

You'll find yourself walking among proper old woodland just outside Northallerton - the sort of forest that feels like it's been here for centuries, with decent paths winding through beech and oak. Clarke's Plantation is straightforward: a managed woodland where the main draw is simply being among the trees, away from the A167. It's not a visitor centre or anything fancy - just forest, which is exactly what some people want.

Walkers get the most from this one. The paths are solid underfoot and it's the kind of place where you can stretch your legs for an hour or so without any particular destination in mind. Kids won't complain if they're the outdoorsy sort, though there's nothing specifically laid on to keep them entertained - no play equipment, no themed trails. History buffs might find the woodland management interesting if they're into that sort of thing, but you're not coming here for a story.

It's free to access, which is brilliant, and you can turn up whenever you fancy. Early morning or late afternoon feels best - the light comes through the trees nicely and it's quieter. Allow an hour for a decent wander, maybe two if you're not rushing.

Paired with the caravan parks nearby - Whorlton Pods and Cote Ghyll are both within easy reach - this makes a proper restful addition to a park holiday. It's the sort of place you pop into between other activities rather than plan a whole day around, but it does the job well.
