Clay Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Clay Wood sits just outside Skelmersdale and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Lancashire forest on a decent day. The paths wind through established broadleaf woodland - mostly oak and beech - with enough variation in terrain to keep your legs interested without being punishing.

It's the kind of place where you'll spot plenty of dog walkers and local families burning off energy on weekends. The canopy is thick enough to feel properly removed from the town, and there are decent viewpoints if you explore the higher sections. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing, though you can easily do a shorter loop in forty minutes.

Timing matters here. Spring brings bluebells in patches, and autumn colour is genuinely worth the trip if you catch it right. Muddy after rain - proper claggy Lancashire mud - so plan accordingly. Summer can be pleasant but the flies are relentless on still days.

If you're based at The Secret Garden Glamping down the road, this makes a solid morning or afternoon leg-stretcher before settling in for the evening. It won't occupy a full day on its own, but combined with exploring Skelmersdale town centre or pushing towards the West Lancashire countryside, it fits neatly into a woodland-focused break. Parking is straightforward from what I could find, and it costs nothing to walk the trails.
