Cleethorpes Boating Lake

The lake sits right in the middle of Cleethorpes, which is genuinely handy if you're staying at Haven Beach Holiday Park just down the road. It's a proper nature reserve, not some manicured ornamental pond - you actually get wildlife here. Cormorants, grebes, herons if you're lucky and keep still long enough. The water's surrounded by reedy margins and rough grassland, so it feels a bit more wild than you'd expect for a seaside town.

You can walk the perimeter on decent paths, which takes a good hour without rushing. The lake attracts serious birdwatchers, but it's equally fine if you just want a stroll with the kids and a look for dragonflies. The whole thing works because it's never overcrowded - most visitors head straight for the beach instead.

Free to access, as far as I can tell, and there's no specific opening time nonsense. Early morning or late afternoon is when the light hits properly and you're most likely to see anything interesting. Spring and autumn migrations bring proper variety to the spot. It's the kind of place that doesn't demand much time but rewards a bit of patience. If the weather turns while you're at the beach, it's a decent backup plan that actually delivers rather than feeling like a compromise.
