Clennon Hill

Standing just above Paignton, this modest hill proves that you don't need towering peaks for proper views across Torbay. The walk up from the town centre takes about twenty minutes through residential streets that gradually give way to rougher paths - nothing too challenging, but you'll feel it in your calves.

From the top, the sweep of coastline unfolds beautifully. Torquay sprawls to the north, while Brixham sits snugly across the bay. On clear days you can make out the red cliffs of Devon stretching towards Dartmouth. It's particularly lovely in the early evening when the light catches the water just right.

Families will find this a manageable adventure for older children, though little ones might struggle with the steeper sections near the summit. Dog walkers seem to love it - we passed several during our climb. The hill itself is common land, so there's no admission fee or set opening times.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Hoburne Devon Bay or Beverley Holidays, this makes for a decent morning's exercise before hitting Paignton beach. Allow about an hour for the round trip, longer if you want to sit and enjoy the view. Best avoided on windy days when the exposed summit can be properly blowy.
