Clews Wood

The woodland around Clews Wood near Shifnal is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for, and that's precisely why it works. Ancient oak and beech trees tower overhead, creating dappled shade that shifts throughout the day. The forest floor is thick with moss and leaf litter - proper muddy in winter, which is half the charm.

It's the sort of spot where walkers genuinely belong. The trees open up into clearings now and then, giving your legs a mental break even if they don't need a physical one. Families with reasonably confident walkers will enjoy it; toddlers might find the uneven ground a bit much. The whole area invites you to slow down and just listen for a while.

There's no visitor centre, gift shop, or the usual heritage park machinery. You turn up, you walk, you leave. Perfect if you're staying at Ted's Farm Caravan and Camping Site just down the road - it's close enough for a morning ramble before breakfast, far enough into the trees to feel like proper countryside. Allow an hour for a decent wander, longer if you're the type to sit on moss-covered logs and think about life.

Go when the light's decent - autumn is magnificent here, winter's atmospheric, and spring brings proper woodland life back. Summer can feel a bit crowded if you hit it on a weekend. No admission charge that we're aware of, which means you can dip in and out as you please.
