Cliffe Hill

The view from Cliffe Hill hits you properly when you crest the final stretch of the South Downs Way. It's not a dramatic peak - Sussex doesn't do drama - but standing here with Newhaven sprawled below and the English Channel beyond, you understand why walkers make the detour.

This is a walker's destination, full stop. The summit sits at 217 metres, which means the climb from sea level is genuine without being punishing. On a clear day you can pick out the chalk cliffs that give the hill its name, and on the rare occasions the weather cooperates, the view across to France is just about there if you squint. Most visits take two to three hours round trip from Newhaven, depending on your pace and how long you linger.

Bring the kids if they're already hiking the Downs - it gives them a proper goal rather than endless footpath trudging. But this isn't a standalone family attraction. You won't find facilities or interpretive boards or anywhere to buy an ice cream. It's a viewpoint, nothing more, and that's rather the point.

The closest holiday parks - The Secret Campsite and Three Ponds are both within a reasonable drive - make decent bases if you're planning several Downs walks. Cliffe Hill works well as part of a longer route rather than a destination in itself. If you're after a quick scenic spot and parking near the summit, look elsewhere.
