Clifftown Phone Box Museum

There's a working red telephone box in Clifftown, Essex, that's been converted into a proper little museum. It sounds daft on paper - a phone box museum - but it's one of those odd British things that actually works. You step inside what looks like any other K6 box you'd pass on a high street, except instead of a telephone directory gathering dust, there are photographs, memorabilia, and information about the history of these iconic structures.

It's free to have a look and takes maybe ten minutes, fifteen if you're genuinely interested in how telecommunications shaped village life. There's something quite moving about it, actually - these boxes were lifelines before mobiles existed, especially for people without phones at home. The museum celebrates that quietly without being heavy-handed about it.

Locals in Rochester will tell you it's worth a quick stop if you're passing, though I wouldn't say plan your entire trip around it. It suits families with younger kids who find anything novel entertaining, and it pairs well with a longer walk along the coast or a visit to one of the nearby holiday parks. Essex Glamping is about five miles away if you're staying over - proper accommodation from there to pop back and explore the area properly.

The real charm is that it exists at all. Someone cared enough to preserve a bit of everyday British history in the most unglamorous way possible. That's rather lovely.
