Clogwyn Coch Copper Mines

Rusted machinery and crumbling stone walls scatter across the hillside here, testament to the Victorian copper boom that once made this remote corner of Gwynedd ring with industry. The mines operated from the 1850s through to the early 1900s, and what remains today is a proper explorer's playground - though one that demands respect and caution.

You'll find the main workings about a mile's walk up from the road, with the remains of crushing mills, tramways, and shaft entrances still visible among the heather. Industrial archaeology enthusiasts will have a field day picking out the different phases of development, while kids love clambering over the safer stone structures (keep them well away from any open shafts).

The setting is spectacular, with views across to Snowdon's eastern flanks, but this isn't a manicured heritage site. It's rough ground, often boggy underfoot, and there's no visitor centre or facilities. Allow a good two hours if you want to explore properly, and wear decent boots.

From nearby parks like Llanberis Touring Park or Beddgelert Campsite, it makes a cracking half-day trip for families with older children who fancy a bit of adventure.
