Clotworthy House

The grey stone facade of Clotworthy House sits just outside Antrim town, commanding the kind of quiet authority that comes with three centuries of standing in the same spot. It's a seventeenth-century manor house - proper substantial, the sort of place where you can almost hear the creak of floorboards even from the driveway. The building itself is the draw here; the rooms tell you far more than any placard could about how the landed gentry actually lived in Ulster.

History buffs will find themselves properly engaged, particularly if you're interested in the period when this part of Ulster was being carved up between settlers and native Irish. Families with older kids who aren't bored stiff by old houses might manage an hour, though it's not the sort of place with interactive exhibits or costumed guides rushing about. The real value comes if you're already spending time in the area - Antrim has decent walking routes, and the nearby caravan parks at Six Mile Water and Blair's Castlewood make this a natural stop rather than a destination in itself.

The setting matters too. The grounds give you breathing room, and on a decent day it's pleasant enough to wander about before heading back toward town.
