Cloudy Lake

The water here is genuinely murky - hence the name, I suppose - but don't let that put you off. Cloudy Lake sits just outside St. Neots and offers a proper retreat for anyone wanting a quiet walk and a bit of nature without the tourist crush. It's the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of ice cream vans.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from Cloudy Lake. The water attracts waterfowl year-round, so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. There's no formal circuit that I could find, but you can potter about the perimeter and get some decent views across the water. It's not dramatic landscape photography material - this is gentle Cambridgeshire fenland, all flat horizons and open sky - but that's rather the point.

With the St. Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site just 2.3 miles away, this works brilliantly as a morning or late-afternoon outing from a park holiday. Similarly, Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is under five miles off if you're based there and want variety. Allow an hour for a relaxed walk. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and no facilities to speak of, so come prepared.

Kids might get restless after thirty minutes unless they're keen on spotting ducks. Adults after peace and quiet will find it properly rewarding.
