Clough Bottom Reservoir

Water stretches out between the Rossendale moorlands like something someone forgot to finish. Clough Bottom Reservoir sits quietly here, a proper working reservoir that doesn't make a fuss about itself - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just water and sky and the occasional heron looking thoroughly unimpressed.

You get here via a straightforward walk from Rossendale town centre, which is handy if you're staying at Rossendale Holiday Cottages & Glamping just down the road. The path isn't particularly dramatic - it's more a gentle amble than a fell-top expedition - but that's rather the point. The reservoir itself is a decent size, and on a clear day the reflections off it are genuinely worth pausing for. It's the sort of place where you hear more birds than people, which beats most tourist spots hands down.

Walkers will find this useful as part of a longer loop around the valley. Families with young children won't find it thrilling for hours on end - there's water to look at and paths to follow, but no paddling, no cafes, no reason to stay longer than thirty or forty minutes unless you're into serious bird watching. Photography types will have a field day, especially early morning when the mist clings to the water.

If you're based at Rossendale Holiday Cottages or Dearden Wood further afield, this works as a morning constitutional before something more substantial. No admission fees that I can find, no opening hours to worry about. Just turn up, have a look, move on.
