Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve (Cleghorn Glen)

The glen cuts through the landscape like a scar - steep sides thick with oak and birch that somehow feel both wild and remarkably close to civilisation. Cleghorn Glen, part of the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve, is the sort of place you stumble into rather than deliberately seek out, which is probably why it works so well.

Walking the woodland paths here is proper therapeutic. The canopy's thick enough that even on grey days it feels atmospheric rather than gloomy, and if you time it right - spring for bluebells, autumn for the colour - the light filters through in ways that make you understand why people bang on about Scottish woodlands. The Clyde Water itself runs through, which means there's actual movement and sound rather than just the crunch of your boots on the path.

It's a walker's place, straightforwardly. Families with young kids will manage the easier routes fine, but this isn't about stopping for ice cream - you're here for the walk itself. Allow two to three hours if you want to see the reserve properly without rushing. The steeper sections aren't technical, just persistent.

Lanark's barely a mile away, which makes this genuinely convenient rather than a special trip. If you're staying at Ecosse Glamping nearby, it's practically on your doorstep. Free access and no specific opening hours means you're not fighting crowds or watching your watch. Go early morning if possible - the place has a different feel before lunchtime.
