Cnoc Odhar Auchaluskin

The walk up Cnoc Odhar takes about an hour from Auchaluskin, and it's one of those Scottish hills that punches above its weight. You're looking at roughly 300 metres of climbing - nothing dramatic, but it's proper enough to get the legs working. The real draw is the view across Kintyre once you're up there. On a clear day you can see right across to Islay, and the Paps of Jura sit on the horizon like sentries.

It's walkers' terrain, this one. Families with decent hill legs will manage it fine, though very small children might find the final push tedious. The path is reasonably well-trodden but can be boggy in patches - good boots matter. Allow three hours return if you're not rushing, which you shouldn't be because the summit's worth lingering on.

Tarbert's your nearest town for supplies and a decent cup of tea afterwards. What makes this useful is its position between the two excellent caravan sites - Muasdale Holiday Park is just three miles away, and Killegruer sits another couple of miles beyond that. So if you're basing yourself at either for a week, Cnoc Odhar gives you a solid morning's walk without chewing up your whole day. It's not the most famous Argyll hill, but that's rather the point. You won't be queuing.
