Cockroad Wood Castle

Tucked away near Wincanton, Cockroad Wood Castle is one of those archaeological sites that rewards the curious but won't hand you anything on a plate. It's an Iron Age hillfort - the earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking at, though calling it a "castle" is generous marketing from a previous century.

What you're actually wandering through are ancient defensive ditches and ramparts, now softened by centuries of woodland growth. It's less dramatic than Cadbury Castle or Maiden Castle, but that's partly the appeal. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, no crowds. Just you, the trees, and the faint impressions of how people chose to fortify this spot two thousand years ago.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Walkers less so - unless you're already in the area exploring Somerset's broader archaeology. Children might manage twenty minutes before wondering why there aren't any actual ruins to climb on. The site costs nothing to visit and you can access it pretty much anytime, though daylight hours make sense.

If you're camping at Sunnyhill Campsite, just 1.7 miles away, it's a decent leg-stretch rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with other Iron Age sites in Somerset or use it as an excuse to explore Wincanton's quieter side. The real value is in the wider landscape - this woodland holds layers of history that most people drive past without noticing.
