Coed Pen-y-bythod

The forest at Coed Pen-y-bythod is exactly the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick snap for Instagram. Located a short drive from Caernarfon, it's a genuine working woodland where you can actually lose yourself without worrying about the crowds that plague more famous spots in Snowdonia.

What you get is mature forest - thick trees, proper shade, and miles of reasonably well-maintained paths that loop through. The terrain varies enough to keep it interesting, though it's nothing too demanding. You'll spot native species if you're lucky and the light filters through nicely in late afternoon. Locals come here to walk dogs and clear their heads rather than tick boxes.

It's excellent for families with kids old enough to manage 45 minutes to an hour on foot - younger ones might lose interest unless you're leading them on a treasure hunt. History enthusiasts won't find much here; it's genuinely just a forest, which is rather the point. The admission appears to be free, and you can rock up whenever suits.

If you're camping at either Aberafon or Gyrn Ddu, both within five miles, this makes a solid morning or late afternoon excursion. The nearby campsites are well-regarded, so you could easily combine a gentle forest walk with proper base-camp comfort. Don't expect dramatic views or a cafe - this is about the walk itself.
