Coed Rhedyn

The forest paths at Coed Rhedyn wind through dense woodland just a few miles north of Chepstow, offering proper relief from the noise if you've been doing the town circuit. It's ancient forest - the sort where you genuinely feel like you've stepped back in time, with gnarled oaks and thick fern undergrowth that explains the name (coed rhedyn means fern wood in Welsh). Walking here is straightforward rather than dramatic. The trails are well-maintained but nothing too taxing, making it ideal for families with younger kids who need something achievable without the slog of a big hill walk. You're looking at between forty minutes to an hour and a half depending on which route you take and how often you stop to catch your breath.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow pace. Dappled light through the canopy, birdsong that actually varies by season, mushrooms and moss - all the forest details that somehow vanish when you're rushing. In autumn it's particularly good, when the colours shift and the damp leaf mould smell takes over. Winter's quieter but can feel a bit bleak if there's no sun.

The real value is as a morning outing from Penhein Glamping, which sits just five and a half miles south near the Wye Valley. Pair it with a wander around Chepstow itself - the castle's worth an hour, and the riverside walk back towards the bridge is genuinely lovely. Free to enter, naturally, as with most Welsh woodland access. Don't expect facilities or crowds here. Bring proper shoes in wetter months.
