Coille Lurach, Glassary Woods

A steep woodland walk through Glassary Woods near Lochgilphead leads you to Coille Lurach, a rocky outcrop that rewards the effort with proper views across Argyll. The climb is bracing - nothing too technical, but it's a genuine leg-stretcher that'll take the best part of an hour from the car park.

Once you're up there, you get that satisfying sense of having earned it. The rocks themselves are the draw here - weathered, dramatic, and the kind of place where you can actually see why someone might have thought it worth naming centuries ago. On a clear day the outlook over the surrounding woodland and beyond is genuinely decent, though I won't pretend the weather cooperates often enough in this part of Scotland.

Walkers will appreciate this far more than casual strollers. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper hike will get something out of it, but if you've got toddlers or anyone reluctant on hills, this isn't the one. Allow a couple of hours all in, including time to sit about at the top.

The location makes sense for a longer Argyll holiday. The Pod Over By is just down the road at 0.7 miles - a solid choice if you're after something modern and low-fuss - and Lochgilphead Caravan Park offers the traditional setup if that's more your style. Either way, this works well as a morning walk before heading elsewhere in the day.
