Coker Hill

Coker Hill sits just outside Yeovil, a modest rise that rewards the walk with surprisingly decent views across the Somerset Levels and into Dorset. It's not Alpine stuff - you're looking at maybe 350 metres - but on a clear day you get proper sightlines across farmland and villages that make the short climb worthwhile.

The walk itself is straightforward enough, taking about 20 minutes from the nearest car park. Grass underfoot, a few trees for shade, nothing technical. Families with kids will manage it fine, though under-fives might need carrying the last stretch. You're not talking an all-day expedition here - this is the sort of place you fit in with other Dorset outings, perhaps combining it with a loop walk if you've got the energy.

Historically it's got some interest - ancient settlement vibes - but don't come expecting information boards or visitor facilities. There's no café, no shop, just the hill and the view. That's rather the point. In summer the walk can be scorching without tree cover, so early morning or late afternoon works better. Winter's fine if you don't mind a bit of wet grass.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Esme's Escape or Dorset Forest Garden Glamping, Coker Hill makes an easy morning outing before heading further into Dorset proper. It's unpretentious, quick, and gives you a genuine sense of the local landscape without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. Worth 90 minutes of your time, realistically.
