Coldstream Gorse

The gorse blazes yellow across Coldstream Forest near York come spring, turning what's otherwise a fairly standard woodland walk into something briefly spectacular. It's not vast - you're looking at a couple of hours maximum to get the best of it - but if you time it right, the colour alone makes the detour worthwhile.

This is proper walking country rather than a stroll. The paths wind through mixed woodland with patches of that fierce gorse breaking through the trees, especially on the higher ground. On a clear day the views open up nicely across the North York Moors beyond. Families with older kids will manage fine, though there's nothing particularly child-friendly about it - no play areas, no visitor centre, just forest and footpaths.

Go between late April and June when the gorse flowers. Winter's quiet but damp underfoot. Parking can be tight at weekends near the main access points. It's free, obviously.

If you're based at Ravensdale Glamping Retreats just down the road, this makes an easy morning out without driving far. The nearby York estates and parkland give you plenty of options if the weather turns. Coldstream doesn't pretend to be anything it's not - it's a useful local walk with a golden bonus rather than a destination in itself. That said, when those flowers are out, it's genuinely worth planning around.
