Cole Wood sits quietly near Bethersden, a proper little pocket of woodland that rewards a gentle wander but won't consume your whole afternoon. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shop, no visitor centre, just trees and paths. The wood itself is manageable in size, making it ideal for families with younger kids or anyone after a straightforward forest walk without committing to a full day's hike.

What you get is a mix of ancient woodland and more recent plantings, with decent paths cutting through. On a decent day the light filters through nicely, and there's enough variety in the terrain to keep things from feeling too samey. The appeal here is genuinely low-key - it's the kind of place you visit because you're staying nearby, not because it's on every guidebook's must-do list.

Allow an hour or so, depending on how slowly you walk and whether you fancy sitting about. There's no entry fee that I'm aware of, which is refreshing. If you're camping or glamping at one of the local spots - Wildside Camping is barely three miles away, or there's Broadhembury just over three and a half - Cole Wood makes a sensible morning or late-afternoon diversion. It's particularly good if rain's forecast because the trees offer decent shelter.

Honestly, it's not dramatic. But that's rather the point. If you're after something more substantial, you'll want to explore further afield. For a quiet, free woodland potter between other activities though, it does the job.
