It's proper walking territory - a chain of lakes and riverside paths that connect villages rather than a single entrance-fee attraction. You get water birds aplenty (herons, grebes, the lot), plus ancient woodland where you'll actually lose sight of suburbia.

Walkers will find real value here. The park links up different sections along the Colne itself, so you can do anything from a quick forty-minute loop near Uxbridge to a full day's expedition. Families with young kids will appreciate the easier flat sections around the lakes, though muddy stretches are common even in dry spells. History buffs might find the old mill sites and medieval field patterns interesting rather than dramatic.

Free access throughout - no gates, no charges. Parking varies by location; best bet is to use the car parks at major entry points rather than hunting for roadside spots.
