Combe Hill Wood

The woodland walk up Combe Hill doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. You're looking at a proper Somerset beech and mixed woodland site just outside Glastonbury, the kind of place locals know and visitors often miss while chasing the Tor.

It's genuinely worth the climb if you've got decent boots and an hour to spare. The path winds upward through mature trees, and the views back across the Levels once you've reached the top are genuinely arresting - flat patchwork fields stretching toward the horizon, with Glastonbury itself visible on a clear day. The wood itself is peaceful rather than dramatic. No dramatic rock formations, no café at the summit, just trees and space and the occasional creeping sense that you've stepped back a couple of centuries.

Walkers will get the most from it. Families with young kids might find the climb a bit of a slog on the return journey, though it's not particularly technical. History enthusiasts should know the area has Bronze Age connections, though you won't find interpretation boards spelling that out. You'd need to do your homework beforehand.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites - Orchard Farm, Bobsfield, or Tall Trees are all within a few miles - this makes an excellent half-day outing. Combine it with a walk around Glastonbury town itself and you've got a proper day sorted. Best avoided in heavy rain when it becomes genuinely muddy, but almost any other season works well.
