Comrie ROC Nuclear Bunker

A working nuclear monitoring station from the Cold War sits hidden in the hills just outside Crieff, and you can actually go inside. The ROC (Royal Observer Corps) Bunker at Comrie is one of the few places in Britain where you get a proper sense of what those tense decades felt like - not the sanitised museum version, but the real deal.

Inside, it's cramped. Deliberately so. You're descending into a 35-foot-deep underground complex built to withstand a nuclear blast, with narrow corridors, original equipment still in place, and the kind of Formica and institutional green that makes you feel genuinely displaced in time. The volunteers who run it know their stuff and aren't afraid to tell you the uncomfortable bits - this place was meant to be a survival shelter for a skeleton crew while everything above ground potentially burned.

It's not a day-long attraction. Most people spend 90 minutes here, maybe two hours if you're thorough. Families with kids under ten might find it a bit claustrophobic and the subject matter heavy, but teenagers interested in history or Cold War politics will find it genuinely absorbing. The setting in rural Perthshire adds to the oddness of it all - this sinister piece of infrastructure plonked in farming country.

If you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby - Comrie Croft or Comrie Holiday Park are minutes away - it makes a natural rainy-day stop or a half-day excursion before heading to Loch Earn. Worth the visit if you're into that period of history. Less so if you're after cheerful family fun.
