Cone and Vessel

Two enormous vessels rise from the forest floor like ancient monuments, their rust-red surfaces weathering naturally among the trees. Part of the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, Cone and Vessel consists of exactly what the name suggests - a massive cone and cylindrical vessel that dwarf visitors walking beneath them. Created by David Nash in 1986, these weathering steel sculptures have developed a lovely patina over the decades, blending surprisingly well with their woodland setting near Lydney.

Climbing through and around the structures feels like exploring industrial archaeology, though children might find more excitement scrambling over fallen logs nearby. The real appeal lies in how these geometric forms contrast with the organic chaos of the forest - it's properly thought-provoking stuff that rewards a slower look.

Allow about twenty minutes unless you're doing the full sculpture trail, which takes a good couple of hours. The pieces work best as part of a longer forest walk rather than a standalone destination.
