Cooper's Plantation

Cooper's Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside York - the kind of place you stumble upon and wonder why it isn't rammed with people every weekend. It's ancient forest in the truest sense, with towering trees that have seen centuries pass, and paths that wind through the undergrowth in a way that feels genuinely wild despite being so close to the city.

You'll get the most out of it if you're after a decent hike rather than a casual stroll. The woodland is dense enough that you feel properly away from things, and the paths are worn enough to follow but unmistakably off the tourist trail. Bring proper walking boots - it gets muddy, especially after rain.
