Coronation Whin

A sprawling woodland walk just outside Thirsk that's far less crowded than you'd expect for something this close to town. Coronation Whin is essentially a proper forest - dense enough that you feel genuinely away from things despite being minutes from the main road.

The paths wind through mature trees with enough variation to keep things interesting. There are open glades where light floods through, sections where the canopy closes overhead, and some decent natural features if you're the type who notices that sort of thing. It's not dramatic scenery - no cliffs or vistas - but it's the kind of place where a two-hour wander feels restorative rather than exhausting.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young children might find it a touch monotonous unless they're keen on exploring, and it's a bit ordinary if you're after dramatic views. Older kids who like building dens and spotting wildlife will have a field day.

Allow an hour minimum if you're just doing a loop, longer if you want to properly explore the network. There's no information on facilities - bring what you need. The woodland is free to access, which is always welcome.
