Corton Hill

Standing 189 metres above the English Channel, this grassy summit offers one of the finest coastal panoramas in Dorset. From the top of Corton Hill, you'll see the famous Chesil Beach stretching towards Portland Bill, with Weymouth's curve of golden sand clearly visible to the northeast. The climb from Portesham village takes about 20 minutes up a fairly gentle slope - proper walking boots recommended as it can get muddy after rain.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot, particularly on clear days when the views extend across Lyme Bay. Families with older children should manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might find it a bit much. The hill forms part of the South West Coast Path, so you can extend your walk along the ridge if you fancy more of a hike.

Being open countryside, there's no admission charge and you can visit any time of year. Early morning or late afternoon light makes for the best photos, and autumn days often bring the clearest visibility. Allow an hour for the round trip from Portesham, or longer if you want to sit and take in those views properly.
