A fifteenth-century manor house sitting quietly in the Somerset countryside between Taunton and the Brendon Hills, Cothay Manor feels like stepping into a National Trust property that time forgot - except it's privately owned and all the better for it. The house itself is a proper medieval gem, with that distinctive asymmetrical roofline and mullioned windows you'd recognise from every Tudor property guide. Inside, the rooms are genuinely lived-in rather than roped-off and sterile. You'll see original plasterwork, period furniture, and the kind of domestic clutter that makes a place feel real.

The gardens are the real draw though. Built over centuries, they wrap around the manor in a series of compartments - formal terraces, a water garden, and woodland walks that reveal themselves gradually as you wander. It's the sort of place where you can easily lose an afternoon without feeling rushed. History types will appreciate the layers here; families with younger children might find it a bit heavy on the heritage and light on interactive elements, though the grounds give them space to roam.
