Cove Bay Harbour

The working harbour at Cove Bay pulls in fishing boats most days, and there's something properly absorbing about watching the crews land their catch and mend nets along the waterfront. It's not a sanitised, heritage-museum kind of place - this is real Aberdeen fishing life, weathered and functional. You get a genuine sense of how the sea still matters to this corner of the northeast coast, which is refreshing when so many harbours have been turned into craft beer venues and gift shops.

Walk around the edges, watch the activity, grab a coffee from one of the basic cafes tucked nearby, and you'll spend a good hour here without forcing it. The light on the water can be lovely, especially mid-afternoon, and photographers often hang about waiting for boats to come in. It's free to wander, obviously - this is a working space, not an attraction in the glossy sense.

Families with patient kids will get more from it than those expecting entertainment. It's the kind of place that teaches you something about how coastal communities actually function, rather than how they've been packaged for visitors. If you're basing yourself at Deeside Holiday Park a few miles inland, it's worth the drive over for an hour or so, particularly if you've got an interest in fishing or maritime life. Don't expect much in the way of facilities or fanfare. What you're after here is authenticity, and Cove Bay has that in spades.
