Cow Myers

You'll find Cow Myers on the outskirts of Ripon, a limestone outcrop that rises rather unexpectedly from the surrounding countryside. It's not a sprawling tourist attraction - more a geological curiosity that rewards a brief detour if you're already in the area. The rock formation itself is the draw, pale and distinctive against the green Yorkshire landscape, and the walk up takes maybe twenty minutes depending on your pace. Not taxing, but it gives you proper views across the Ripon valley. History buffs might appreciate that this is limestone country with a working quarrying past, though there's little interpretation on site to explain what you're looking at. The rock itself is unremarkable to stand on - no viewing platform, no café - but that's rather the point. You come here for the walk and the vantage point, not for facilities. Kids might find it bit steep for what it is, unless they're the type who enjoy a genuine outdoor ramble without theme park trappings. Walkers will get more from it than most. If you're based at Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park or Riverside Meadows just two miles away, it makes sense to knock it off an afternoon itinerary. Worth allowing an hour including the approach. Spring and autumn are best - summer can draw midges, and winter rain makes the path properly muddy. Free to visit and no formal opening hours mean you can tackle it whenever suits.
