Cows and Sows

Just outside Shortlanesend, Cows and Sows is one of those proper old-school Cornish landmarks that's been there so long locals barely mention it anymore. It's a working farm attraction where you can actually meet the animals - cows, pigs, and whatever else they've got on the day. Nothing fancy, no theme park theatrics. You turn up, have a wander around, feed or watch the livestock depending on what's allowed when you visit.

Families with young children will get the most mileage out of it. There's something about hand-feeding a pig or seeing a calf that keeps kids entertained for an hour or so. Adults after a serious day out might find it a bit thin on content, but it works as a quick stop-off between other activities.

The real value is as a half-day break if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Monkey Tree is closest at just over four miles, though Wrinklers Wood and Trevarth are also within easy reach. None of these sites are huge, which suits the area's low-key vibe.

Contactless information before you go is tricky - opening times and admission fees aren't advertised online - so ring ahead or check locally in Shortlanesend. It's the kind of place that operates on farm hours rather than tourist schedules. Not worth a dedicated trip from far away, but a pleasant enough diversion if you're camping locally and the weather's decent.
