Crafts Study Centre

The Crafts Study Centre sits in Farnham, a proper gem if you're into design and making. It's essentially a working archive of contemporary craft - textiles, ceramics, metalwork, jewellery, the lot - spread across a converted Victorian building that feels more intimate than institutional. You wander through displays of actual pieces, many of them loaned by makers themselves, and there's something quite grounding about seeing how someone solved a technical problem or pushed a material to its limit. The collection changes regularly, so it's not the sort of place where you'll see the same show twice.

This is one for people who actually care about how things are made. If your idea of a museum visit is speed-walking through rooms while kids fidget, give it a miss. But if you've got teenagers interested in art, design students researching techniques, or you're just someone who likes understanding craft - the ethos here is refreshingly un-stuffy. Staff tend to be makers themselves, which changes the whole tone of a visit. Allow an hour, ninety minutes if you're reading the detail on pieces.

Farnham's a lovely town to base yourself in, and Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat is just down the road at under four miles - handy if you're combining this with a proper walking holiday. The Centre's free entry, which is decent of them. Check opening hours before you go though - they keep their own schedule.
